Setting legend.itemWidth restricts each data series by more and more

When using itemWidth to restrict the width of item labels in the legend of a line chart, only the first couple of items are restricted to the correct amount; each subsequent item is restricted more and more until only a single character is visible per line, and finally none are. Here is a fiddle that demonstrates the problem:
