can the period of null point be trimmed?

I am using CanvasJS to draw diagram for my room temperature. Somehow my sensor may fail and did not upload any data for days. I have to manually insert a null point if the next data is longer than one hour away. So there would not be a long straight line to connect these two dots. However I would like to know whether I can make these null days shorter contract to the data sections. It would be better if there are date marks to indicate the time jump.

As of now the only way to get a break in the line is to introduce null data point as described here.
